Since ancient times, man has developed systems, as simple and reliable as possible, in order to determine both the position of the place on the earth's surface where he was and the direction in which he was moving. Undoubtedly the stars have for centuries been the most intuitive and secure means of solving this problem, and of creating the basis of a local geodetic reference essential for surveying the land and producing geometric cartography. Surveys of buildings and their orientations, which until a few decades ago were carried out only with theodolites and electronic total stations, can now be supplemented with the use of
GPS instruments to determine the coordinates of certain points with high accuracy and then to calculate their azimuths.
